Tweenie time (beginning at approximately 14 months) is an important time in your child’s development.
We provide activities and interactions to support all developmental areas. Interest areas in the classroom allow one-on-one and small group activities, with child sized furniture and open shelves. We focus on language skills by teaching simple words and sentences to express needs and feelings. We read stories, sing songs, and name objects. Tweenies work on developing their fine motor skills through playing with manipulatives such as lacing, peg and pin boards, and gross motor skills by walking on a ‘walk beam’ and stepping blocks, and through outdoor play on our 1-2 year old playground. The Tweenies are encouraged through supportive gestures such as hugs, high-fives and phrases to develop a positive sense of self and acceptance of peers.
Communication is encouraged and facilitated by daily information sheets, an information board, detailed lesson plans posted weekly, and naturally, an open door for visitation and participation in classroom activities or special events. On the daily info sheet, parents/guardians can learn about activities of the day, how the child ate, napped, etc.
Family-teacher conferences are held twice a year to discuss the child’s development, as monitored with the Teaching Strategies Gold assessment tool. Parents/guardians are welcomed and encouraged to chat on a regular basis with staff about development, questions, or concerns.
As children leave the Tweenie Room, they are in all their Toddler glory!
